MetaMask Wallet — Friendly Quick Start

Practical setup, everyday security, and how to use MetaMask with dApps

What is MetaMask?

MetaMask is a browser and mobile cryptocurrency wallet that lets you manage Ethereum and many EVM-compatible assets, interact with decentralized applications (dApps), and sign transactions securely. It stores your private keys locally and requires you to approve every transaction. Think of MetaMask as a bridge between your browser and the blockchain — it shows addresses, balances, and request prompts that you must confirm.

Getting started — setup checklist

Before you begin, have a quiet, private spot and a pen & paper ready. Avoid using public computers when creating or recovering wallets.

  1. Install MetaMask from the official source: the Chrome/Firefox/Edge add-on store or the App Store / Google Play. Verify the developer/publisher is the official MetaMask project.
  2. Create a new wallet or import an existing one using your recovery phrase (seed).
  3. Write down the 12-word secret recovery phrase exactly and store it offline. Never store it in cloud notes or take photos.
Security reminder: Your recovery phrase is the single master key. Anyone with it can control your funds. Keep it offline and in at least two secure locations.

Creating or restoring a wallet

When you pick Create a wallet, MetaMask will ask you to set a password for local access and then generate a 12-word recovery phrase. For Restore wallet, enter your exact phrase. After setup, MetaMask shows your account public address — this is safe to share for receiving funds.

Using MetaMask — receive, send, and connect

Receiving

Click AccountCopy Address and share that address with the sender. Always verify the address shown in MetaMask matches the one you shared.

Sending

To send funds, enter recipient address and amount, then carefully review the gas fee and final details in the confirmation modal. MetaMask will display the transaction summary for your approval.

Connecting to dApps

When a dApp requests connection, MetaMask will show a permission prompt listing which account is being requested. Only connect to sites you trust and check the permissions carefully — some sites can request spending approvals which allow them to move tokens on your behalf.

Gas, networks & tokens

MetaMask defaults to Ethereum Mainnet. You can add other networks (e.g., testnets or BSC, Polygon) by configuring network RPC details. To manage tokens, either add them manually by contract address or let MetaMask detect common tokens after receiving them. Be mindful of gas fees on mainnet — confirm fees before approving.

Troubleshooting & support

If you lose access, only your recovery phrase or connected hardware wallet can restore your account. If transactions fail, check network selection and gas limits. For extension issues, try restarting the browser or clearing site data for dApps you use. Visit MetaMask's official support pages for verified help.
